Contractor Licensing in New Jersey

New Jersey requires Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration with the Division of Consumer Affairs before advertising, quoting, or beginning work. As of January 8, 2024, contractors must maintain workers' compensation insurance plus general liability, and carry a compliance surety bond: $10,000 for single contracts under $10K or annual totals below $150K; $25,000 for contracts $10K-$120K or annual totals $150K-$750K; $50,000 for contracts over $120K or annual totals exceeding $750K. CAPS certification is recommended for accessibility specialists. Verify contractor registration with the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs.
