Contractor Licensing in Minnesota
Minnesota requires a Residential Building Contractor license for contractors offering more than one 'special skill,' administered by the Department of Labor and Industry (DLI). Remodelers also require licensure. Exceptions: contractors making less than $15,000 annually (with certificate of exemption), specialty contractors providing only one skill, and homeowners doing work on their own homes. Minimum insurance: $100,000 per occurrence, $300,000 aggregate, $25,000 property damage. Workers' compensation is required for employees. For Medicaid waiver-funded EAA services, lead agencies must verify provider credentials, and comparable itemized bids are required.
